In a matchup of AL Cy Young contenders, the Yankees prevailed winning their 6th in a row, beating the Rays 4-3.
Rays young star Shane McClanahan was good, but not his usual dominant self. Allowing runs on 2 homers, which is something he is not used to doing. McClanahan threw 6 innings allowing 3 hits, 2 walks, and 4 runs however only 1 of them earned. He did strikeout 7 and collected 14 whiffs, he did so using his mix of 4-seamers, curveballs, and changeups. 5 of the whiffs came on his changeup, which had a CSW of 36%. His changeup was only put in play 1 time, which was a double play groundout off the bat of DJ LeMahieu. His changeup has a -2.6 RV/100, .132 BAA, .132 SLG, and a 45.1% whiff rate. Ryan Thompson and Shawn Armstrong both threw scoreless innings and each struck out 1.
Yandy Diaz and Manuel Margot both had multi-hit games for the Rays, both of them hit 2 doubles. If you take away those two guys the Rays offense only had 3 hits and all of them singles. The Rays only had a .181 XBA as a team.
The Yankees offense was even worse than the Rays, they only had a .172 xBA as a team. Two homers off the bat of Aaron Judge and Kyle Higashioka were the sources of run scoring for the Yanks.
Nasty Nestor Cortes was his usual self, Nasty. He threw 5.1 innings of 3 hit, one run baseball. He struck out 4 but did walk 3, he also had 13 whiffs, 9 of which came on his 4-seamer. Cortes 4-seamer has a -8 run value and a .184 xBAA. Wandy Peralta lowered his season ERA to 1.50 throwing 1.2 innings of no hit baseball. Miguel Castro got roughed up, only tallying 2 outs while giving up 2 earned runs. Lucas Luetge allowed 2 hits but did finish the inning started by Castro. Clay Holmes continued his dominant scoreless streak, striking out 1 in his inning of work, lowering his season ERA to 0.29.
