Mychal Givens Traded To The Mets

Posted on August 29, 2022August 29, 2022 by Max T

The Mets acquired RHP Mychal Givens from the Cubs in exchange for RHP prospect Saul Gonzalez.

The Mets get some bullpen help in the form of reliever Mychal Givens. Givens has posted a 2.66 ERA and a 3.68 xFIP in 40.2 innings pitched with the Cubs this season. Givens can struggle with his command at times, posting an 11% walk rate with the Cubs. He has countered his high BB% by posting a 30% K rate and an xBAA of just .201 with the Cubs.

The Cubs acquired RHP Saul Gonzalez a former 23rd round pick in the 2018 draft in exchange for Givens. Gonzalez has pitched 25.2 innings in low A for the Mets this season, striking out 10.17 hitters per 9 innings and posting a 2.81 ERA and a 3.09 xFIP. There is not a ton of data on Gonzalez who is rule 5 eligible this upcoming december, but this is probably the best return the Cubs could get for Givens who is a rental with a mutual option for next season.

The Mets acquired an arm to boost their bullpen, while the Cubs flipped a 32 year old possible rental for a pitching prospect.
