Mets Acquire Tyler Naquin and Phillip Diehl for Prospects

Posted on August 5, 2022August 5, 2022 by Max T

The Mets received OF Tyler Naquin and LHP Phillip Diehl from the Reds in exchange for RHP Jose Acuña and 2B/OF Hector Rodríguez.

Tyler Naquin is another platoon bat that the Mets can use against righties. In 52 games with the Reds this season Naquin has a 117 wRC+ against righties, compared to his 45 wRC+ against lefties through 27 games this season. Naquin isn’t the best defender posting -3 DRS and -1 OAA in the outfield with the Reds this season, but he should limit the amount of time that guys like Jeff McNeil have to play in the outfield. Naquin is a rental for the Mets, as he is slated to be a free agent after this season.

The Mets also acquired LHP Phillip Diehl. A 27th round pick by the Yankees in the 2016 draft, he has been in the Yankees, Rockies, Reds, and now Mets organizations throughout his career. He has only thrown 19 career innings in the big leagues, posting a 9.47 ERA and a 5.58 xFIP. Diehl has spent the majority of his time with the Reds this season at AAA, throwing 23.1 innings, posting a 4.24 ERA and a 4.13 xFIP. While these numbers aren’t great Diehl has shown potential in the past, he spent his entire 2021 campaign at the AAA level where he posted a 2.47 ERA and a 11.69 K/9.

The Reds received 2B/OF prospect Hector Rodríguez in return, he becomes their 57th ranked prospect according to fangraphs. Rodríguez is only 18 and has played all but 2 games at complex leagues. He projects as a plus hitter with average fielding. In 26 games this year with the Mets at the Florida Complex League, Rodríguez is slashing .356/.387/.558 with a 153 wRC+.

The other prospect that the Reds received is RHP Jose Acuña. He is only 19 and has pitched in complex leagues and A ball. In 25.2 innings this season with the Mets at the FCL he has a 3.16 ERA and a 2.94 xFIP. He has also started 2 games at the A ball level throwing 8 innings, accumulating a 1.13 ERA and a 3.42 xFIP.

The Mets acquired some more platoon help against righties, and a pitcher that has shown flashes at the upper levels of the minors in his career. While the Reds acquired some complex league guys, in exchange for an impending free agent and a guy with a career 9.47 ERA at the big league level.
