Mariners vs. Angels 6/26/22 Analysis

Posted on July 29, 2022August 4, 2022 by Max T

On of the biggest brawls that the MLB has had in awhile.

The Mariners threw at Mike Trout’s head the night before, whether it was intentional or not, the Angels decided to use an opener for this game. In the first inning, opener Andrew Wantz threw behind Julio Rodriguez, then the next inning he hit Jesse Winker. That is when mayhem started, multiple players threw punches, and the brawl resulted in 8 total ejections. The total delay was about 18 minutes.

Jose Suarez came into the game when Wantz was ejected, he struck out 8 across 6 innings allowing only 1 earned run. Oliver Ortega threw 2 innings of scoreless baseball in relief of Suarez. Marco Gonzales recorded a quality start, going 6 innings allowing 2 earned runs. Andres Munoz and Ken Giles both threw scoreless innings of relief.

The only run scoring for the Mariners came in the 6th inning, a solo homer off the bat of Abraham Toro. All of the Angels run scoring came in the 7th inning, Luis Rengifo the leadoff hitter of the inning hit a solo homer. Later in the inning David MacKinnon hit a go-ahead RBI single to center field, Mike Trout was thrown out trying to advance to third, but the run still scored.

The Mariners and Angels provided a flashback with an old school style brawl, in a game where the actual playing of baseball was not the main focus. It will be quite some time before another brawl like this takes place.
