Josiah Gray 6/25/22 Start Breakdown

Posted on July 26, 2022August 4, 2022 by Max T

Josiah Gray had his longest start of the season going 7 innings while striking out 9 hitters.

Gray struck out 2 in the first, he did allow a two run homer in the second but those would be the only runs he gave up in his outing. He struck out 1 in the third and 2 in the fourth, going 3 up and 3 down in both of those innings. Gray allowed 2 singles in the fifth, but both came with 2 outs and Gray got out of the inning with a pop-up. Gray struck out 1 in the sixth, and then struck out the side in the seventh.

Josiah Gray threw more sliders and curveballs than 4-seamers this outing. Gray struck out 5 with his slider and 4 with his curveball, his slider had 8 whiffs and his curveball had 7 whiffs. Gray’s breaking balls are definitely his best pitches, his slider has a -1.3 RV/100, .179 BAA, and a 45.2 whiff%, and his curveball has a .198 BAA and a 36.9 whiff%. Gray’s underlying numbers haven’t been great the past two years, he had a 6.00 FIP in 2021 and has a 5.22 FIP so far this season. Gray will have to change something if he wishes to turn out like the top prospect he was supposed to be, that something might be increasing his breaking ball usage. His 4-seamer had an 8 run value last year and already has a 9 run value this year, decreasing his usage of the 4-seamer would definitely help improve his numbers.
