Chad Kuhl threw a complete game shutout versus the Dodgers. Kuhl only allowed 3 hits while striking out 5.
Kuhl faced the minimum in the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Striking out 1 in the second, 1 in the fourth, and 2 in the fifth. He allowed a 1 out single in the seventh, but got a lineout and a flyout to end the inning. He then faced the minimum in the eighth, he did allow a leadoff double in the ninth, but struck out the next hitter, and then got a groundout and a lineout to get out of the inning and preserve his complete game shutout.
Kuhl does not have a lot of swing and miss stuff, he is in the bottom 29th percentile in whiff% this season. However his slider did have 6 whiffs and has been his best pitch all season. It is his only pitch that has a negative run value this season, and was the same last year. So it makes no sense that he has dropped his slider usage from 46.1% last year to 36.3% this year. The only reason that makes sense is that 8 of his 13 homers allowed last year came off of his slider, and with the move to Coors Field during the offseason Kuhl wanted to try to cut down the amount of long balls given up.
