Astros vs. Yankees 6/25/22 Analysis

Posted on July 26, 2022August 4, 2022 by Max T

The Astros no-hit the Yankees in a 3-0 victory, it is the first time that the Yankees have been no-hit since 2003.

Cristian Javier was simply dominant, he struck out 13 across his 7 innings of work. 8 of the 13 K’s came off of his 4-seamer, and 13 of the 20 swings and misses came off his 4-seamer. Javier’s 4-seamer had an xBAA of .047 versus the Yankees. Javier’s 4-seamer has the best BAA of any 4-seamer in the league, at .174 and the second best xBAA of any 4-seamer in the league at .172, minimum 200 plate appearances. His 4-seamer and slider combination is a very deadly one not just because of the movement but also because of the arm slot that Javier throws from. His slider has just a .131 xBAA. Hector Neris came into the game in the 8th inning trying to preserve the no-hitter, he walked 2, including a leadoff walk. Neris induced two flyouts and a groundout to get out of the inning. Ryan Pressly came into the game not just trying to pick up the save, but to finish off the no-no. He did just that striking out 2 and getting a groundout to get the Astros their 14th no-hitter in franchise history.

Not much to say about the offense of a team who gets no-hit, but the Yankees have a Cristian Javier problem. He held their offense to a .036 xBAA across his 7 innings of work.

Gerrit Cole also threw 7 innings allowing 4 hits and an earned run, he struck out 8 and collected 19 swings and misses. His 4-seamer was also his main weapon striking out 5 of the 8, and having 12 of the 19 whiffs. Cole’s 4-seamer has a -1.2 RV/100, .190 xBAA, and a 38.1 K%. Michael King and Lucas Luetge both allowed an earned run in their innings of relief.

J.J. Matijevic scored the first run of the game in the top of the seventh when he turned on a 100 mph low and in fastball from Gerrit Cole, hitting it 403 feet for his second career hit as well as his second career homer. The King of New York, Jose Altuve pulled an inside fastball down the left field line for another homer against the Yankees. Yuli Gurriel had a pinch hit RBI single, and Jake Meyers had a multi-hit game.
