For the first time in MLB history a team threw 2 immaculate innings in the same game, and it was against the same 3 hitters.
Astros starter Luis Garcia and reliever Phil Maton both threw immaculate innings. Garcia in the 2nd & Maton in the 7th. They both struck out Rangers hitters Nathaniel Lowe, Ezequiel Duran, and Brad Miller. Luis Garcia threw a gem for the Astros striking out 9 over 6 innings while only allowing 1 earned run. Phil Maton of course threw an immaculate inning, and he did so only throwing fastballs. Maton threw 9 fastballs, getting 6 whiffs on 7 swings. Seth Martinez and Brandon Bielak both threw scoreless outings for the Astros. Throughout 9 appearances this year, Seth Martinez has yet to allow an earned run.
The Astros offense gave Luis Garcia a 6 run cushion before he even stepped onto the mound. A Yordan Alvarez double, Kyle Tucker groundout, Jose Siri single, and a Martin Maldonado double did the run scoring for the Astros in the first. Maldonado also hit a homer in the 4th inning, he finished the game 2/4 with a 2B, HR, 3 RBI’s and a run scored. Yuli Gurriel also hit a 2 run homer in the 8th inning.
The Rangers were down and out from the beginning of the game. Starter Tyson Miller was knocked out of the game, only being able to collect 2 outs. Miller allowed 4 hits, 2 walks, and 6 earned runs. Jesus Tinoco threw a scoreless 2.1 innings of baseball. Kolby Allard was able to give the Rangers some length after their starter was knocked out before the 1st inning was even over. Allard went 5 innings striking out 4, he did allow 2 homers, but the game was already out of reach when he came in, it hardly mattered.
The Rangers offense was non-existent, the only source of run scoring was a Corey Seager homer. The Rangers only had 4 hits as both Luis Garcia and the Astros bullpen were nails.
