Orioles vs. Blue Jays 6/15/22 Analysis

Posted on June 24, 2022August 4, 2022 by Max T

From first career homer to a walk off hit, this game had it all. The Blue Jays eventually bested the Orioles in 10 innings 7-6.

Jose Berrios had one of his better starts of the season, he threw 7 innings allowing 3 hits and 3 earned runs. While striking out 8 and collecting 18 swings and misses, 11 of which came on his curveball. His curveball had a CSW of 51% and a BAA of .176. Berrios has some wicked horizontal movement on all of his stuff, but especially his curveball which has 57% more horizontal break than the average curveball. Yimi Garcia had an outing that he would like to forget, going only 0.2 innings allowing 3 hits and 3 earned runs. Tim Mayza finished the inning that was supposed to be Garcia’s. Jordan Romano and Adam Cimber both had hitless innings, each striking out one.

The Blue Jays had a .301 xBA as a team. Every single Blue Jay had a hit except George Springer and Bo Bichette. Matt Chapman and Teoscar Hernandez both had homers. Alejandro Kirk hit a double, the catcher is now hitting .311 with a .852 OPS on the season. But the story of the Blue Jays offense was 23 year old Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who also hit a homer, but most importantly hit a walkoff single in the bottom of the tenth.

Bruce Zimmermann had a polar opposite start from Berrios. Zimmermann allowed 11 hits, 6 earned runs, and 3 homers across his 4.2 innings of work. The starter’s ERA is now up to 5.94 on the season after facing the juggernaut of a lineup that Toronto has assembled. The Orioles bullpen was once again nails. Bryan Baker pitched 2.1 innings of hitless baseball, he also had 2 K’s. Dillon Tate pitched a scoreless inning, lowering his season ERA to 1.72. Jorge Lopez struck out 2 in his hitless inning of work, his ERA is now sub 1, at 0.85. Felix Bautista was put in a tough predicament, runner on second, tie game, and no outs. He threw 2 fastballs to Vladdy and on the second, Vladdy hit a walkoff single to deep left. The run was unearned.

The Orioles offense only had a .192 xBA as a team. Ryan Mountcastle hit 2 homers, a solo shot in the 7th inning and a 2-run shot in the 8th. But the Orioles offense was headlined by Adley Rutschman who hit his first career home run, a two run shot in the 4th inning off of a Jose Berrios fastball. Rutschman also had a double.
