Reds vs. Diamondbacks 6/14/22 Analysis

Posted on June 17, 2022August 4, 2022 by Max T

Tyler Mahle became the first pitcher since 1900 to not win while throwing nine or more scoreless innings on the road with at least 12 strikeouts and no walks, according to STATS.

Mahle was brilliant, throwing a career-high 119 pitches. Mahle flat out shoved, he went 9 innings striking out 12 and allowing only 3 hits. He collected 18 swings and misses, 11 of which came on his fastball. Mahle’s fastball which he throws over 50% of the time, has a -7 run value and .179 BAA. Alexis Diaz and Luis Cessa both only gave up unearned runs in their appearances. Joel Kuhnel only needed 5 pitches to get through his inning of hitless work.

Zach Davies also had a great start going 7 innings giving up zero runs and striking out 7. Davies collected 10 swings and misses, 6 of which came on his changeup. Davies changeup has a .194 BAA and only a 23.4% hard hit rate. Noe Ramirez and Joe Mantiply both threw scoreless appearances. Mark Melancon only gave up an unearned run, while Ian Kennedy and Sean Poppen both allowed earned runs in their outings.

Not a single run was scored until the game went into extras, which makes sense because there is not a single .800 OPS on either team except for Brandon Drury. Kyle Farmer was probably the offensive player of the game, he went 3-5 with 2 RBI’s.
