It has been 21 years since the Cardinals have thrown a no-hitter. Miles Mikolas was one strike away on Tuesday.
Mikolas threw 129 pitches across 8.2 innings gathering 6 strikeouts and giving up the only hit of the game while being one strike away from a no-hitter. Throughout the course of his no-hit bid he collected 11 swings and misses, his 4-seamer and slider both had 4 whiffs. His 4-seamer which was thrown 36 times throughout the no-hit bid has a .176 BAA and a -1 run value. Packy Naughton got the last out of the game once Mikolas was pulled.
The Cardinals supplied quick run support for Mikolas when leadoff man Tommy Edman homered on the first pitch he saw. Edman finished the game going 3-5. Paul Goldschmidt homered twice within the first two innings. Goldy finished the game 4-4 with 5 RBI’s.
Bryse Wilson had the exact opposite start from Mikolas. Wilson went 5 innings giving up 10 hits and 7 earned runs, he raised his season ERA to 8.29. Anthony Banda gave up 2 earned runs in his inning of work. Heath Hembree and David Bednar both threw scoreless appearances.
Cal Mitchell got the only hit of the ballgame for the Pirates in the form of a ground rule double over the head of center fielder Harrison Bader, even though they had 10 hard hit balls as a team.
