Daniel Vogelbach Traded to the Mets

Posted on August 5, 2022August 5, 2022 by Max T

The Mets acquired Daniel Vogelbach from the Pirates in exchange for RHP Colin Holderman.

The Mets who have received minimal production from their DH position, have now addressed that issues especially against righties. Vogelbach has posted a 149 wRC+ against righties this year with the Pirates. He has also posted a .532 SLG against them, giving the Mets some much needed pop at the DH spot. Volgebach isn’t a free agent until 2025, so the Mets should have a good platoon bat for the next few seasons.

The piece that the Pirates got in return is RHP Colin Holderman. Across 17.2 innings at the big league level with the Mets this season, Holderman has pitched to a 2.04 ERA and a 2.27 FIP. His fastball is approaching a plus plus pitch, and his slider projects as a plus pitch. Holderman only started 26 of his 68 total games pitched in the minors, and has yet to start a game in his young major league career. Unless he has a third offering emerge as an MLB ready pitch, Holderman will likely stay a reliever. There is a solid chance that he becomes a high leverage guy, with a sinker that has topped out at 98.9 mph so far in his MLB career, and a slider that gets great horizontal movement.

The Mets got a much needed bat with some years of team control left, and the Pirates acquired a young reliever with some solid stuff and virtually no service time. This trade makes sense for both the contending Mets and the bottom of the barrel Pirates.
