Phillies vs. Padres 6/24/22 Analysis

Posted on July 25, 2022August 4, 2022 by Max T

The Padres defeated the Phillies 1-0, because of a brother vs. brother matchup.

Aaron Nola had a fantastic outing going 7 innings allowing only 1 earned run, Nola struck out 10 and had 18 swings and misses. He struck out 4 hitters with his sinker, which had a CSW of 41%. His sinker has been a great weapon for him this season, it has a -1.9 RV/100 and a .194 BAA. It gets even better when used in a two strike count, it has just a .123 BAA. Jose Alvarado pitched an inning in relief, he struck out the side. Alvarado struck out 2 on his cutter, which has been elite so far this season. It has just a .099 xBAA, .138 xSLGA, and a 56.5 whiff%.

Austin Nola hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth against his younger brother Aaron. The RBI single would be the only run scored in the game. Jurickson Profar and Eric Hosmer recorded the only two extra base hits in the game, both of them had doubles.

Rookie MacKenzie Gore started for the Padres, he threw 5 innings of shutout baseball while striking out 4. Gore’s 4-seamer was responsible for 3 of those strikeouts and 2/3 of his swings and misses. His 4-seamer has been his best pitch all year, it has a -7 run value and a .230 BAA. Gore gets virtually no horizontal movement on either his slider or curveball, if he could reshape his slider into more of a sweeper it would not only improve the number on both of his breaking pitches, but also on his fastball because the horizontal movement would give the hitters another thing to think about. Nabil Crismatt threw 2 innings in relief striking out 1. Luis Garcia struck out the side in his inning of work, all on sliders. His slider has been an elite pitch so far this season, it has an .053 xBAA, 55.4 whiff%, and a -2.1 RV/100. Taylor Rogers picked up his 22nd save of the season, he struck out a hitter in his inning of work.

The Phillies offense generated zero extra base hits, Alec Bohm and Matt Vierling both had two hits, Rhys Hoskins was the only other Phillie to record a hit.
