Astros vs. Yankees 6/24/22 Analysis

Posted on July 25, 2022August 4, 2022 by Max T

The Astros ended the Yankees 15 game home win streak behind a vintage Justin Verlander start, winning 3-1.

Verlander threw 7 innings allowing only 4 hits, a walk, and an earned run. Verlander did only strikeout 3 hitters but was dominant throughout his entire outing. Verlander’s velocity across the board was up from his yearly average. He generated 6 whiffs on his 4-seamer which has a -1.4 RV/100 and a BAA of just .213. While the strikeout numbers weren’t where they usually sit for Verlander, the Yankees offense felt overpowered when up at the plate against Verlander.

The only hiccup on the stat sheet for Verlander was a solo shot off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton. Josh Donaldson hit a double, Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu were the only other two Yankees with base hits.

Five Astros hitters recorded a hit, Yuli Gurriel and Alex Bregman both recorded doubles. All 3 of the Astros runs came off the bat of Kyle Tucker who took Yankees starter Luis Severino deep in the sixth inning.

Other than giving up a homer to Kyle Tucker, Luis Severino had a good outing. Severino went 6 innings striking out 7 and collecting 15 whiffs. His slider was responsible for 5 of the 7 strikeouts and 6 of the 15 whiffs. Severino’s slider has a -1.9 RV/100, .158 xBAA, and a 45.7 K%.
