Shaky defense from Rays outfielders Manuel Margot and Randy Arozarena allowed the Yankees to score twice in the 4th inning, and that would be the only scoring to happen in the 2-0 Yankees win.
The Yankees offense only had two extra base hits, Gleyber Torres and Isiah Kiner-Falefa both had doubles. The Yankees offense did produce 9 hard hit balls, Aaron Judge was responsible for 3 of those hard hit balls even though he finished the game 0-4 at the plate.
Meanwhile the Rays offense was almost non-existent, generating zero extra base hits, only 4 hard hit balls, and a .211 xBA.
This is due to the fact that vintage Gerrit Cole was back after allowing 5 homeruns in his last outing. Cole went 6 innings, striking out 7, and only allowing 5 hits all of them singles. The 31 year old starter generated 11 swings and misses, 6 of which came on his fastball. The righty attacked Rays hitters all day, throwing his fastball 45% of the time, and he filled up the zone with it as it had a called strikes plus whiffs percentage of 46%. Michael King struck out 2 in his 1.1 innings of work. Clay Holmes continued his dominant streak striking out 2 in his inning of work, as he lowered his ERA on the year to 0.30.
Sharing the mound with Cole was Rays starter Corey Kluber. Kluber went 6 innings striking out 3 and not allowing an earned run. Luke Bard and Calvin Faucher both tossed scoreless innings. But the non-existence of the Rays offense never gave their pitching staff a chance.
